Africa

For many, a South Africa vacation is a dream come true. Safaris are the big draw, as the country’s major game parks offer the chance to view the “Big Five”—lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos—along with many other beautiful and exotic animals. A host of safari options exist, with accommodations ranging from modest to luxury. A vacation in South Africa could include a birding safari, a hiking safari, a horseback riding safari, or even a flower safari, in which participants view the vast fields of Namaqualand wildflowers that bloom during August and September.

Those who travel to South Africa soon discover that the destination offers many reasons to visit. The Western Cape’s wine route offers the chance to view beautiful rolling vineyards and sample many of the country’s top vintages. The southern Cape coast is one of the world’s top whale-watching destinations. In the town of Hermanus, visitors can often watch whales from their hotels. Cape Town offers exquisite dining, great shopping, many live jazz venues and the world-famous Table Mountain, which can be ascended via Cableway. Near Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, are such sites as the Cradle of Humankind, where human ancestor fossils millions of years old were discovered, and Soweto, South Africa’s biggest township and home to the Nelson Mandela Museum. Then, of course, are the vast number of sporting adventures that can be experienced during a vacation in South Africa—diving, surfing, bungee-jumping, hiking and golfing, to name just a handful.

U.S. citizens traveling to South Africa require a passport with at least two blank visa pages at the time of entry. No visa is required for visits of up to 90 days. Direct flights from the U.S. to South Africa fly into Johannesburg. Visitors travel within South Africa by air, train or car. Driving is on the left, road conditions are good, and a U.S. driver’s license is acceptable for renting a car. South Africa is subtropical and known for its temperate, sunny climate. The seasons in South Africa are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere; spring is August to mid-October, summer is mid-October to mid-February, fall is mid-February to April, and winter is May to July. The currency is the Rand.
